Moving is one of the top five stressful life events for individuals. Recent polls suggest that 45% of people say it is by far the most! Our daughter recently counted the times she moved just in her first two years in college – as many as ten times! When I asked her how she coped she said she consciously gives away an item for each one she adds. What a concept that would be for us as older adults. I’ve found that the longer I am in one place, the more I accumulate – perhaps just human nature. Considering the later phase of “home” is clearly a shift in mindset thinking about the “downsize” season ahead. While it would be great to view this as a bit of “luxury” others are forced into the process through unexpected life events.
As a Senior Specialist I am certified to work with individuals 50 years plus, planning and selling their homes. I strive to determine what “luxury” in “home” means to them. For some it’s a future of having meals prepared, others it’s no home to manage, perhaps living in a community with activities or a combination thereof. Regardless of the benefits starting over and downsizing can bring on a multitude of emotions. For most the drastic change of going from larger to a much smaller dwelling size can be the biggest. It is for this reason the planning of what cherished possessions to bring and what not to take can be critical to the adjustment and should never be underestimated.
I love to see the process in action well in advance of a move – perhaps one to five years ahead! This became my passion seeing my own parents through and realizing that It’s never too soon to begin simplifying, decluttering, and sharing belongings with someone that will use, appreciate, and love them. This can put you and your loved ones well ahead for later or an emergency. It can be the change for now that adds space and peace of mind to enjoy life ahead. In my own home we’ve just begun and its one drawer and one room at a time. We take photos of things we want to remember, enjoy the memories, and pass them along.
